The Freedom Riders who were arrested in Jackson, Mississippi, were sent to a maximum-security prison. There they tried to keep their spirits up by singing freedom songs. The guards threatened to take their mattresses away if the prisoners kept singing. Freedom Rider Jim Bevel said, "What they're trying to do is take your soul away. It's not the mattress, it's your soul." Another called the guards and said, "Come get my mattress. I'll keep my soul."
What might Bevel have meant when he said that by taking the mattresses the guards were trying to take the riders' souls?
